ʻŌuli Farms is a sustainable development located above Mauna Kea Resort. Over the next 12 years, it will include 142 homes, 200+ acres of farmland, and recreational spaces, all while promoting sustainable living, cultural preservation, and community-building.
A total of 142 homes will be built in phases. Phase 1 will include 42 homes on 5-acre plots with 1-acre fruit groves.
Each home in the community will have a 1-acre fruit grove where residents will cultivate fruit trees such as avocado, ʻulu, mango, and citrus. These groves will support both personal and community food production.
Farmers will manage the community garden and 142 1-acre plots to cultivate crops like avocados, ʻulu, mango, citrus, and native plants. The focus will be on sustainability, with over 200 acres of farmland dedicated to supporting local food production and Hawai‘i Island’s food sustainability goals.
Farmers passionate about sustainability and cultivating fruit groves will manage the half-acre farming plots for personal use. This differentiation ensures that those most dedicated to sustainable practices will oversee the land while maintaining a larger focus on community agriculture.
Sustainability is integrated into every aspect of ʻŌuli Farms, including:
- Utilizing non-potable water for farm and recreational use.
- Homes will feature water-efficient systems and solar power.
- Seasonal stream water will be captured for farm irrigation, and green waste will be recycled for farm use.
No, vacation rentals will not be permitted. The goal is to foster a close-knit, sustainable community that focuses on long-term residency and cultural preservation.
ʻŌuli Farms will use non-potable wells for farm and recreational irrigation. Homes will have water-efficient systems, and conservation efforts will be central to minimizing water usage and preserving resources.
Fire safety protocols will include the creation of green belts and reservoirs to protect the community from potential wildfires, along with support for local fire departments and volunteer efforts.
Residents will have safe access in the future via two key roads, Kawaihae Road and ʻAmaui Drive, ensuring smooth and secure entry to the community. The development of these entry points is anticipated in a future phase.
The project will create over 200 jobs across various sectors, including farming, hospitality, construction, and management. By the project’s completion, approximately 150 staff will be employed, significantly contributing to the local economy.
ʻŌuli Farms is dedicated to supporting Hawaiʻi Island’s food sustainability. The community’s farming efforts will produce locally grown crops for distribution through food hubs and will also supply a farm-to-table restaurant and school food programs.
ʻŌuli Farms will integrate Hawaiian culture by planting native trees, such as milo and sandalwood, to prevent erosion and regenerate the land. Cultural gardens will be created, and classes led by kūpuna will teach residents about traditional practices.
Through the ʻŌuli Farms Foundation, the project will give back to local non-profits, including the Agricultural Leadership Foundation of Hawai‘i, Koi Pond Bridges, Children’s Miracle Network, and The RISE Project. Educational programs will also be offered in partnership with local schools and the University of Hawaiʻi.
Yes, educational partnerships with local schools and the University of Hawaiʻi will offer field trips, internships, and hands-on learning programs aimed at inspiring future generations of farmers and sustainability advocates.
ʻŌuli Farms will include recreational spaces designed to promote a healthy, active lifestyle. These spaces will support community activities, farming, and conservation efforts, all while connecting people to the land.
Farmers at ʻŌuli Farms will grow a variety of crops, including avocados, ʻulu, mango, citrus, and native plants. These crops will support local food distribution, farm-to-table initiatives, and school programs.
The long-term goals of ʻŌuli Farms include building a self-sustaining community rooted in Hawaiian cultural values, promoting food sustainability, and fostering an environmentally friendly lifestyle. The development aims to become a model for sustainable living in Hawai‘i.
